The network spans over 2 houses and covers 4 flats in total to share one internet link.

Cabling & L2

The cabling consists mainly of used CAT5-E cables that someone had thrown away at the local recycling center. All of them were electrically ok and capable of gigabit speeds, which is basically all you need. Most of the cables were pulled through existing empty conduits which were actually intended for POTS but never used. There is also a four-fiber connection between LKS_GLURNS_SW1 and LKS_GLURNS_RTR (connection between the flat and the basement), as some conduits are to small to fit more than one CAT5-cable. This cable also transports the internet connection from the flat to the router in the basement.

Rack & Server

A 22U (600mm depth) rack, situated in the basement, houses LKS_GLURNS_RTR, LKS_GLURNS_UPS1, LKS_GLURNS_ESXI01, a media-converter for the connection between LKS_GLURNS_RTR and LKS_GLURNS_SW1 and a small unmanaged switch for the management/installation network. This rack is actually a completly useless object, at all if only three or four devices are mounted (racks are generally overhyped for home setups, you could throw everything onto a shelf and it would work anyway). So why would I even consider something like that? Back in 2019, there was a wrong price listing for a Triton 19" Delta S 22U rack on amazon, it cost around 100€ including shipping instead of around 600€ list price, so i couldn’t resist buying one.
